Leslie K. Brill’s paintings present a unique arboreal portraiture that deviates from traditional landscape painting. Brill’s emphasis favors the tree not in a detailed, botanical sense, but with an organic handling of the oil paint. Richly-colored energetic marks include or exclude parts of the tree, but always retain the dendritic structure of the subject. Brill’s work presents the viewer with a visual message from each tree and we are ultimately left with a new awareness of trees—and of painting.
Brill now lives in Ithaca, New York, close to the Fall Creek trees that are so inspirational to her work. Brill has an MFA in painting from Ohio State University and a BFA from Cornell University. Since the 1970s her work has shown in galleries from New York to Ohio.
