Janet Sawyer :
Lost Trees - Alive on Gallery Walls
April 23 - May 18, 2024
Reception Saturday April 27, 3-6 pm
Blue Mountain Gallery presents Janet Sawyer’s exhibition entitled Lost Trees, paintings done from 2000 to 2023. The artworks were painted in addition to the work she exhibited during that time span. They often reflect personal encounters with much loved trees, recalling Jonathan Goodman’s Art in America review which noted her ability to convey “the joy that comes from intense involvement with one’s surroundings.” Realizing that these trees no longer exist (due to mudslides, pine beetles or new property owners) and that the works had not been shown previously, she has decided to present them this spring, as trees revive.
There are eight acrylic on canvas paintings, including a 48“ x 144“ triptych and 48 x 90“ diptych as well as 18 gouache or acrylic works on paper.
Janet Sawyer has exhibited continually since 1972. Her work is in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Reviews include the New York Times, Art in America, Art News, Ms magazine and Where, New York..
