Blue Mountain Gallery presents Drawn to Life: A Sketchbook Diary, from July 8– 26; artist’s reception, Thursday, July 10, from 5:00 – 8:00P.M. This is an exhibition of drawings  by Hank Blaustein, drawings that constitute a visual diary of his life experiences: people and places at home and abroad.

Hank Blaustein, a native and lifelong Brooklynite, born in 1937 in Crown Heights, has been drawing the world around him since he could hold a pencil. His subjects are people, places, and things that draw him to them; his goal is to capture their essence and personality on paper. He is, in effect, an artist-journalistwho records his observations in spontaneously rendered ink, pencil and watercolor. His style is classic, immediate, straightforward and honest – without judgment.

Blaustein has won awards in group shows, among them the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, and has been on display in the Brooklyn Museum Community Gallery. He has had several one-man shows in the States, including the Gallery at Lincoln Center and A.M. Adler, in New York, and Morgan State University in Baltimore. A frequent visitor to Italy, he has shown in Urbino and Ferrara. In 2008 he was featured in Vienna in conjunction with the twinning of Brooklyn with the Viennese district of Leopoldstadt.

Hank Blaustein’s mastery of line has made him a sought after choice for editorial and book illustration. Over the last four decades his work has appeared in financial journals such as Grant’s Interest Rate Observer and Barron’s, as well as the New York Times, the Village Voice, Newsday, the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, and the New Yorker. His drawings have graced books on subjects as varied as psychoanalysis, fishing, and children’s literature. Whether it is a cartoon, an editorial illustration, a drawing, or a sketch Blaustein’s uniqueness lies in his ability to make his subjects come alive on paper.
