Jim Weidle

Jim Weidle : Paint Happens

September 4 – 29, 2018

Reception Sept 6th, 5-8 pm

After a nearly thirty-year absence from the NY Art scene (a member of Fischbach Gallery, ’82 through early 90s), Jim Weidle began in 2014 to be selected for curated group shows at the independent Chelsea galleries (First Street, Blue Mountain, Prince Street). He is now pleased to announce a NY one-person exhibit at Blue Mountain Gallery.

The work features intensely observed oils on canvas, generally done on location, or built up from on-location drawings and small color studies. Everything on display was done within the past two years.

Oh, and he built a straw-bale house, late 90s, northern Idaho (home from ’92-’06), using five basic handyman tools. Now lives in Iowa; the Announcement card, titled, “Raining, w Bike (Outside Prairie Lights Bookstore)”, is from Iowa City.

On painting, he has been overheard to say, “it has the decency to hold still, as few dare or can, permitting one’s eye a tiny but wild freedom: to travel as it will.”

Jim Weidle is a painter’s painter devoted to the sensuality of the oily stuff while delivering in turn irony, humor, in a taut balance of realism and abstraction. His work careens from storytelling to formalism, pulling back for a long view, zooming in for a closeup. Leaves, landscapes, toys, comics, bikes, cars, roads: you’ll see a lot that seems familiar but from an entirely new and gooey perspective.
