Michael Chelminski : Recent Work

May 22 – June 16, 2018

This spring at Blue Mountain Gallery Michael Chelminski is presenting oil paintings and watercolors. The show is accompanied by a catalog with an essay by Margaret Grimes. (Link to pdf in production)

The paintings span nearly a decade during which the work, dominated by contrasting themes of forest and sea, slowly evolved into a semi abstract language of marks. These are paintings, originating in the studio, where the organic, graphic lines of trees, grasses, underbrush and water are built upon sources both from memory and onsite watercolors.

The artist will be present during Saturdays after the reception.

Michael Chelminski has a BFA and MFA from Yale University, with studies under Josef Albers, Bernard Chaet and Louis Finkelstein. He did residencies at the Macdowell Colony, New Hampshire; the Crescent H Ranch, Wyoming; and the Blue Mountain Center, New York.

Chelminski has been in numerous exhibitions, most recently at the Sleeth Gallery, Wesleyan College; The Kosciuszko Foundation, NY; the Trenton Art Museum; and Indiana University Art Gallery. His work is in the collections of Indiana University Art Museum; Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art, Florida; and Yale University Art Museum, as well as private collections throughout the U.S
